Why the ability to evolve may be one of the most important qualities employers should look for.
Experience has always been a major factor in hiring, and for good reason. Companies want professionals who understand their industry, know how to solve problems, and can contribute without a lengthy learning curve.
But with technology advancing, business models changing, and companies constantly adjusting to new challenges, experience alone doesn't always tell the whole story.
What someone has accomplished matters. But their ability to adapt, learn, and apply that experience to what's next may matter even more.
Experience Gets You in the Door. Adaptability Helps You Grow.
When companies are posting open roles, we see very detailed “wants” on what and who they are looking to hire. The right industry, the right technology, the right background, and typically experience doing the exact same job somewhere else.
Those qualifications certainly have value. But they don't always tell us how someone will perform when things change and evolve.
Some of the strongest professionals we've worked with during our recruiting careers are those who've taken their experience into unfamiliar situations, learned new technologies, adapted to different leadership styles, and found ways to contribute.
They aren't necessarily the candidates with the most impressive resumes (whatever that means). They're often the ones who know how to make their experience work in a changing environment.
Hiring for Yesterday or Tomorrow?
Consider how quickly technology is changing the workplace. Skills that were highly sought after just a few years ago are evolving, while new tools and expectations continue to emerge.
That creates an interesting question for hiring managers.
Are we hiring someone because they've already done everything we're asking, or because they have the foundation and adaptability to help us get where we're going?
Ideally, it's a combination of both.
Industry knowledge and technical expertise remain important. But so do curiosity, thought process, problem-solving, flexibility, and a willingness to keep learning.
Looking Beyond the Resume
At Elevated Hires, we believe understanding the person behind the resume is an important part of making successful connections.
Experience tells us where someone has been. Conversations help us understand where they can go.
And sometimes, the professional who brings a slightly different background, but demonstrates the right mindset, motivation, and ability to adapt, can bring tremendous value to a growing organization.
The takeaway: Don't underestimate experience. Just make sure you're going deeper to understand what someone is capable of doing next.
Because in a changing business environment, the ability to evolve and adapt may be one of the most valuable skills of all. I think Charles Darwin had something to say about that.
